The person who sold me my blades told me it was more like skiing than anything else. Honestly, I disagree 100%. I spent a few winters ice skating in Maine before I started roller blading in Texas. I think it is identical to ice skating. Then again, you must realize, with all my time in Utah and Maine, I have water skied once, snow skied never!
If you get a good slab of pavement, blading can be like floating on air... well of course it takes effort, but it is such a smooth ride. It can also be a very fast ride. My wife is amazing in endurance and speed on these things. She just flies.
I really am no expert on blading, but I do have a few hints to offer. I hope you find them useful. If you have some you want posted here, let me know.
Hint #1: I personally feel blading is extremely safe when done right. Please, at least wear a helmet, knee pads and wrist guards. I have never had a need for elbow pads, plus I couldn't find some my size, but that doesn't mean they aren't useful.
Hint #2: Blading is a great way to travel. Need to go to the store for just a few items..., well unless you are in the middle of nowhere, like myself, blading is a great way to go.
Hint #3: Blades and cars do NOT mix!
Hint #4: Blading alone can be great. It can help reduce stress and help one relax.
Hint #5: Don't blade alone too often. It can become boring and irritating. Besides, hanging out with friends is cool!
Hint #6: Be safe! Have Fun.
Honestly, tricks and all that are fun, but some times just the basic, simple movements are wonderful. Don't get drawn into the idea that you must be some super start X-Games kind of skater. Stake to have fun. Leave it at that.
Due to my lack of trick-ability, I simply wanted to give some basic hints that can enhance your blading experience. I hope I have done well. Please, realize that if blading alone is boring, music can often help alleviate this.
