The Music Dreams Are Made Of

The first Enya song I ever heard would have to be Orinoco Flow. To the best of my memory I heard this somewhere between 1987 and 1990, though I am not sure. I heard it while doing work with one of my best friends at the time. He had it on tape. I instantly fell in love with it. Several years later (1993-1995) I heard the song again. I purchased Enya (a remastered version is called The Celts), Watermark and Shepherd Moons. These were the only three albums at the time that she had out. I loved them. I still purchase all her albums (making sure I like them before I buy). I also have a few "tribute" albums from Taliesin Orchestra. They are good in there own right. I use them when I am more in the mood for pure instrumental.

For those of you who have your musical favorites you all have your reasons. I have my reasons as well. This page contains many quotes and other material that show you why. Enya to me is someone who followed their dream and made it happen. With all the money she has made she still seems down to earth.

One of the biggest reasons I still enjoy her music and respect her is that her music is also down to earth; it is not full of sexual innuendo, swear words, or lyrics having to do with murdering a fellow human being. Her music seems to be more about relaxing and enjoying the positive side to life. To healing the gaps in our own souls and between ourselves and another being.

"Well I think that it's a combination, because, um, I do get, um, a lot of inspiration because um, I do get a lot on inspiration from being in Donegal, walking on the mountainside, walking on the Atlantic coast, but I don't work anywhere other than in the studio, but the studio, it's a new studio, and it's designed, ah, for me to work there, and it's very peaceful, and upstairs there's this beautiful room where the piano is, and it overlooks the Wicklow Mountains, so it's not very mundane where I work, and uh, but I've actually had to sit at a piano, and sometimes I will sing the melody or I'll play the melody, and, uh, I'm not really aware of what the main inspiration are, for this particular piece, usually what just happens is, the first note, the second note, and it takes me on a journey, and I just go along with it."

"A lot of people know Enya the music, but they don't know what I look like or what I do, and I think that's really good for me and for the music as well," says the Irish singer who has become a superstar in the metaphysical music genre."
...
"I draw a lot of inspirations from where I was brought up in the northwest of Ireland, County Donegal," she said. "I love to go back there, and the people are very proud of my success, but they also treat me as Enya growing up there."
...
"I've derived from religion what I enjoy, and it's more the spiritual side of that," she says. "It's something I can see come through in the melody and the music.
...
"When people sit to listen to the album they're experiencing ... a moment to themselves, and they start to think about their own life," she said.

"Let me just open this little book of answers," Enya says in her New York hotel suite, smiling and turning to thumb through an imaginary book.

Her music, she suggests, helps people make constructive use of that time alone, in an atmosphere in which thought flourishes.

"Of course, sometimes people want to know more about Enya. "I have a very private life," she says. "It's very important to the music, I think, that I'm able to have time away from the music and the life style. The reason I'm able to have a private life is because the music is actually bigger than I am."

Who doesn't need a private life? Let us leave Enya hers, please!

Her music might float in the clouds, but rest assured, Enya's feet do touch the ground.

Good. Glad to hear it. But who ever doubted it?

KSCA 101.9 FM Interview With Enya -- January 18, 1996

"Um, it's um -- there's a combination. Because I'm very spiritual, but I have a great love for melody. This is very strong for me when I'm in the studio working. Um, I just -- I love a strong melody. And, I've heard this in Irish traditional music . . . in classical music . . . and again in hymns -- it's very beautiful -- and, so therefore it's, um, it's strange because when I'm in the studio, it's very different to, um, my private sort of lifestyle. Because a lot of people tend to think that because I need all this time on my own in the studio, that I need time on my own, period. And that's not really true."

"... I like to travel . . . I like to catch up on family and friends, because they tend to get terribly neglected when I'm in the studio. Especially towards the last few months -- it gets very intense for me, so I can't have any distractions. So um, definitely catching up on family and friends is important to me."

What's surprising is that the second largest seller from the land of shamrocks and leprechauns is Enya, a celestial Rumpelstiltskin who spins New Age, pop, and classical music into platinum-selling albums
...

But don't expect the 34-year-old singer to have a bubble-gum trading card anytime soon. "There's no Enyamania," she says, then laughs softly. "Many people who buy my records don't really even know what I look like."

...Unlike many of her contemporaries, whose songs are little more than sonic bubble baths, Enya infuses her music with flowing emotion. "A lot of it sounds melancholy, but that's a reflection of the passion of Irish culture," she explains. "It's not a reflection of me."

Sweet and shy in conversation, Enya is reluctant to divulge aspects of her personal life. She says she doesn't have time for hobbies and enjoys being alone. "I do have relationships, but it's very important to have time to myself, and when you're with someone, they often find that very strange."

"I got a letter from a woman who knew she was going to die," remembers Enya. "She said she loved playing Watermark and had it in her will that each night at a certain time, one of my melodies would be played on her piano. I found that very moving."

"When I've finished something and I sit back and listen to it and it becomes a complete song, that's what makes it all worthwhile."
