The scene: late 1980's, a small neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. Time: who remembers?
I had heard my brother listen to a song called "Pure Energy" often. I really liked it. I didn't know much about music then and I sure as heck wasn't into the "in" thing. My brother needed some cash. I told him I would buy a tape off of him that mostly just had remixes of "What's On Your Mind." (He had just bought it from 'Twoox' Tran down the street, if I remember correctly.) I believe it originally had other songs from an album by Information Society, however, they had been replaced. The only ones left were the remixes and "Walking Away From." (I do not know what has become of this tape. Even if I do find it, I am sure I effectively wore it out.) Time passed and the tape disappeared and I largely stopped listening to music.
Several years passed and I heard "What's On Your Mind" again. I had to have it and went out and bought an album, I believe it is called "Hardware/Software." You may not say Information Society is one of my favorite bands since I only have one album and really only have interest in that one. However, I find several songs on the album speak truth, especially to me. They may mean nothing to people from different backgrounds.
The truths are very simple. I will break them down for those songs I like. The others, I think are rather vulgar and will leave be.
- What's On Your Mind: Communication is a must in any kind of relationship, especially love. Sure, we can fight, break each other down, and just generally try to have our own way, but it just doesn't work.
- Tomorrow: Tomorrow will happen. It doesn't matter what any of us do or say, it will happen. What matters is love, what we do to leave a positive mark on the world. Endless, eternal, pure love; unfortunately, it is often one sided and the other side can be extremely base and abasing.
- Lay All Your Love On Me: Unfortunately, even in the most pure of us, love and a relationship tends to bring out the worst in us: jealousy. I have realized this more since I have been married. I have also realized how important the concept in the Bible is: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Genesis 2:24) The emotional, mental, physical and spiritual bonds of two people in a relationship should supersede anything else. Any other such bonds must be far weaker if the relationship is to be healthy, stable and lasting. However, jealousy is a poison. Neither party in the relationship should incite jealousy in the other, nor allow jealousy to flourish in themselves.
- Repetition: Repetition in life is stagnation and death. However, in relationships, we do often stagnate. We all tend to keep hitting the same impasses over and over in a relationship. We all some times will question whether or not we should stay married or in a relationship during these times of stagnation. However, most of us in that quest find that our lives would be rather lonely without our mate. We go back and repeat the same mistakes, hoping that we can do better. Over a life time, I think most of us do. We just keep trying.
- Walking Away: Whispers and shadows of the past wrap around and haunt us all. Unfortunately, it seems a curse all humans must and will bear. However, we can walk away from the past. We can do better and become more. Some times, we have to run away, run to something else. When things cannot and will not work, we can move on. Along with the curse of the past, we have the ability to repent and learn... to walk away.
- Attitude: People really hate letting others be free to act for themselves. Even those of us who profess a love of freedom and liberty, we still some times have a problem with letting go of others and letting them run their own lives. I, personally, try very hard to have an attitude that allows me to shrug off the chains others would place on me. For the most part, this attitude has allowed me to move through life just fine. Instead of chasing riches or the acceptance of others, we should better ourselves and be ourselves. This attitude of freedom, liberty and daily self betterment will allow us to reach far beyond the chains people can place on us. It allows us to find acceptance that is true and real. Those who want to be master of themselves... to see their lives through... should walk with Attitude.
Truth be known, the music to the songs above is actually very pleasing to me. It has just the right combination of melody, harmony and beat. It is slow enough to allow me to relax when I want and fast enough to be interesting the rest of the time. I also absolutely love the way they layer the voices. In particular, I love the way that the female voice does back-up vocals. I just love it. I wish I could do either part to those songs.
I really don't know much about the band. Apparently they disbanded some time in the late 1980's or early 1990's. It seems one of the main persons in the band created a new one and called it the same name. I do not know how many of the above links reference the original band, the new band, or both bands. Caveat Emptor. Best of wishes in your musical quests.
