| The Big Knight Rider List | Episode Guide |
"One man make a difference." One man did. A car, a man, and the team behind him cleaned up the United States and Mexico. Michael Knight was once Michael Long; a cop. He was shot. The Foundation for Law and Government stepped in and saved his life. They more or less forced him to work for them.
F.L.A.G. was an organization that was created to find, catch, stop and incarcerate any criminal who operated above or beyond the law. This, I believe, meant those who the normal legal channels could not stop or even touch, for whatever reason. This placed KITT and Michael against the baddest of the bads. It placed them in many deep stories.
K.I.T.T. was no ordinary car. He had a high-tech computer on-board with a whopping 32 (or was it 64) kilobytes of ram. He could speak, think, analyze things and even drive himself. While he did need the human component, sometimes it was silly to hear Michael say "turbo boost buddy," and then hit the button himself.
I still love this show. As I have grown older some things seem a little more silly, though. All my life, I have known that KITT was a little beyond what science may ever reach (mostly the artificial intelligence necessary), but I still enjoyed it.
A smart car may be possible, but not to the level of KITT. To be honest, I am not sure I would want my car to be my companion to the level KITT was. For some one in Michael's position, KITT may have been a heaven send.
Having a computer/car and a man as a hero was wonderful in my child hood. It did push heavily the evils of technology when used by evil and the good when used by good. It also brought up some valid concerns about priorities in an algorithm, etc. I personally still dream of making a smart car...
There are only a few things I find wrong with Knight Rider, even today. First, there is more "sexual" content in it than I remember from my childhood. I don't think this was necessary. Second, there seems to be a little too much cheesy acting on the part of David Hasselhoff. Third, Hasselhoff was on that trashy Bay Watch show. This kind of threw a bad light back onto Knight Rider.
I would love to see a show revive this one. Not like Team Knight Rider (which I only saw a few times), but much like the original. Make it more modern. Make it more believable. Make it more of a challenge to win!
